New made in Guam product launched in collaboration with Kindai University

Business students from Kindai University in Japan have teamed up with Guam-based companies, coordinated by F SPACE INC, to create a new "Made in Guam" bath salt product. This project originated from career-planning seminars conducted annually by Kayo Ikehata, representative of F SPACE INC, at Kindai University.

The goal is to provide students with practical learning opportunities through collaborations with real businesses while promoting Guam and gaining insights into the perceptions and expectations of young Japanese people about Guam.

"This project is a fascinating opportunity for both Guam and Japan to learn from each other," says Kayo Ikehata, the project planner. "Japanese students can discover Guam's unique appeal through collaboration with local companies and share their findings with peers authentically. Meanwhile, Guam businesses gain valuable insights into the perceptions and expectations of current Japanese university students. We hope this mutual learning will contribute to the recovery and growth of Guam's tourism industry."

The product, called “The Mellow Encounter”, is a bath salt crafted locally on the island by Malikai Soap, a renowned Guam-based brand specializing in handcrafted natural cosmetics (official website). Scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, and priced at $5.00, the product reflects the students’ desire to symbolize "good encounters."

The Mellow Encounter is an exclusive product of MMS GUAM Corporation and will only be available at the Guam Ocean Park shop. The students infused the product with a hope that those who use it will experience meaningful and positive encounters—whether with Guam, learning, or other people.

This initiative has been made possible through the sponsorship of MMS GUAM Corporation, which operates under its DBAs:

• Guam Ocean Park (official website)
• Sunny Side Up Guam (official website) Press Release

To enhance the product’s appeal, the team also created a compelling story behind its development, which they are sharing on Instagram (in Japanese). Behind-the-scenes insights, including the students' passion and creativity throughout the process, are also being featured.
Project Background

• Practical Learning for Students: Offering hands-on experience in creating and marketing products for a global market.
• Raising Awareness of Guam: Promoting Guam’s charm to younger generations in Japan and supporting the island’s tourism recovery.
• Understanding Today’s Youth: Providing Guam’s tourism industry with real insights into what modern Japanese youth value.
